Grade 9 – 12 & University Preparation Program
During their time at ST.CUTHBERT CLASSICAL ACADEMY, students select an appropriate combination of academic courses to add to their knowledge and skills base; explore courses of interest; determine the type of educational program they are best suited to pursue in university/college and to gain entrance to university or college. University/college preparation courses include content that is relevant for the study of both university and college programs.
Hybrid Synchronous Learning Model
In March 2022, St. Cuthbert Classical Academy transitioned all classes to a synchronous remote learning model using Microsoft Teams and Moodle LMS. Microsoft Teams is used for daily communication and real-time teaching, while Moodle LMS handles attendance, content delivery, assignments, tests, and exams.
For the 2022-2023 school year, we introduced a hybrid synchronous learning model with the following enhancements:
1. Platform Utilization and Enhancement
- Microsoft Teams and Moodle LMS will continue to be used, but with further improvements to enhance functionality.
- Ensure seamless integration between Teams and Moodle for daily communication, assignment submission, real-time instruction, and interactive feedback.
- Create additional course resources, discussion forums, and quizzes in Moodle to facilitate interaction between students and teachers.
- If necessary, set up class recording functionality to allow students to review lessons at their convenience.
2. Classroom Interaction
- The current model enables real-time interaction, mimicking face-to-face learning. Further improvements include:
- Implementing group discussions (Teams has a breakout room feature) where students can discuss and provide feedback within smaller groups.
- Increasing live class interaction with features such as real-time voting, discussions, and instant feedback sessions.
- Providing clearer technical support for both teachers and students to ensure that network issues do not affect the learning process.
3. Course and Activity Scheduling
- The flexibility of scheduling is a key advantage of Hybrid Synchronous Learning. It will be further enhanced through well-planned course timings, after-class recordings, and online learning schedules to foster student autonomy.
- Consider adjusting class schedules based on student needs, offering different learning times or pacing for students with varying subjects or interests.
- Guide students on how to effectively use course resources, manage their time, and develop self-regulation skills.
4. Increased Cross-Regional Interaction
- Allow students to interact across regions or classes, especially those waiting for student visas, encouraging them to participate in online learning activities.
- Simulate the experience of international students by providing opportunities for them to engage in course discussions and social activities online, preventing learning delays due to geographical separation.
- Consider arranging online academic support meetings to help students address questions after class.
5. Personalization and Differentiation
- For students who need additional support (e.g., language learners or students from diverse backgrounds), offer more personalized resources to assist their learning.
- Provide language support classes and technical assistance sessions to help students better adapt to remote learning modes.
- Offer tutoring sessions or one-on-one support to enhance students’ familiarity with digital tools (e.g., Microsoft Teams and Moodle).
6. Feedback and Improvement
- Regularly collect feedback from both students and teachers to evaluate the effectiveness of the learning model and make timely adjustments.
- Conduct student satisfaction surveys to assess their acceptance of the model, gather feedback, and understand their needs.
- Use teacher feedback to offer additional online teaching tools and resources, improving the overall teaching experience.
7. Ensure Robust Technological Infrastructure
- Ensure that the school’s technological equipment and network can support the model, including smooth audio-video teaching, online exams, and easy access to course materials.
- Provide students with necessary hardware, such as Chromebooks, headsets, and microphones, to ensure that all students can participate in remote learning without technical hindrances.
